Career advice from this public enemy will be some of the best you ever hear

You ever heard of Flavor Flav?

If so, I’d bet you probably know him from a painfully bad reality show — Flavor of Love (so painful I watched every season).

But what you might not know is that Mr. Flav is also an inductee into the Rock N Roll hall of fame as part of the iconic group Public Enemy.

I’ll get to why you should care about this in a minute but first I want to share a story about a phone call I had today.

One of my former colleague reached out and asked me to talk to a current MBA student about a career in consulting. Since this was an intro through a friend, I went against my rule of not talking to brain pickers (this cartoon captures it perfectly).

We talked for a bit, doing intros, and answering some consulting related questions and then the conversation pivoted for a moment.

Him: “I noticed you have a tutoring program. How does that work?”

Me: “Well, it’s a 1-on-1 program I started doing for people who want to get more than just the articles I publish, but there’s a ton of content already. Right now, I’m offering this for $125/month with one 45 min call each month.”

Him: “So it’s not like a course where you teach someone how to become a consultant.”

Me: “No, it’s not a formalized course like that but that’s something I’ve toyed with doing in the past. There wasn’t enough interest back then but maybe I should revisit that now.”

Him: “Yes, I think you should do that.

Me: “In the 1-on-1 sessions we’d agree on what you want to focus on so if it’s core consulting skills we can definitely do that.”

Him: “That’s what I really need, someone looking over my shoulder, to make sure I don’t make a mistake, but I can’t take on any additional cost right now.”

Me: “My recommendation in your situation would be to search ‘consulting’ on my blog and see if it answers your other questions. If not, you can shoot me an email and I’ll answer as much as I can.”

That was pretty much the end of the call, but it reminded me of something else I was reading today.

One of the email lists I read (Justin Goff) talked about how the best way to find a mentor is to buy your way into the rooms they’re in. From there, you have a better chance of establishing a rapport beyond all of the other noise.

That’s the reason I joined a mastermind this year run by one of the top marketers to ever do it.

Because I consider it an investment not a cost.

So what on earth does any of this have to do with Flavor Flav?

Flavor Flav is known for always having a clock around his neck. Legend has it’s been the case since 1987 but few people know that it has some meaning:

The reason why I wear this clock is because it represents time being the most important element in our life. Time can’t afford to be wasted, but not only that, but God only gave us one life. Each minute we live, we got to live each second to our best value. Time brought us up in here, and time can also take us out.

I hope you keep that in mind with how you invest your time, the time you ask of others, and the money spend to save time. I’ve never regretted buying back my time, but I’ve regretted NOT doing it sooner many times.
