I hate New Year resolutions and you should too

So here we are in the year 2020 and no flying cars or jetpacks.

That’s the first thing I thought entering the new year. The second thing I thought was I hate New Years resolutions. You should too.

And here’s why…

For starters, it gives a built in excuse to procrastinate on doing anything in the last quarter of the calendar year.

Can you imagine having a leaky roof, the financial means to improve it, and deciding you only like to fix broken things in your house at the turn of the year?

It’d seem a little strange, right? I know it would to me but think about this. How many times have you heard people swear they’re going to make some massive change as soon as the calendar flips to January. (Maybe you’ve done this a time or two yourself. I won’t hold it against you.)

I get it. There’s something satisfying about having clean breaks and fresh starts but here’s the thing…

Starting now and sticking with something is far more valuable than shooting for the stars and being overwhelmed with the pressure before you even get to the end of the month…

Which brings me to my next point.

This one shot mentality of New Years resolutions leads to people overcommitting with the biggest ideas they can think of.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all about personal transformation, but you have to do it at a pace you can sustain for the long haul — and you have to be real with yourself about the steps it’ll take you to reach your goal.

If you’re in the market for a new job, there is at least one favorable thing about January.

A lot of companies have budgets reset for the year, so now is a great time to go hard on your job applications but you need to remember something…

Just like any other part of the year, being able to market your skills is a key success factor.

And the number one way to make sure you’re in a position to market yourself successfully is to get your resume in order.
